Originally built in 1961, McKell Elementary School needed to accommodate an increasing enrollment. The renovation was planned as an overall enhancement to modernize and update the facility, and included windows, mechanical and electrical infrastructure, interior finishes, doors and hardware.
At the front of the building, the addition included a new administrative area and main entry, which provided a secure entry vestibule. Other improvements included a new, larger media center with an adjacent computer lab as well as additional kitchen space and the addition of eight regular classrooms. A new bus canopy was also constructed at the main entrance, creating a new image for the entire building.
A phased construction process enabled the facility to remain fully occupied and operational during the renovation and addition process.
