Built in 1970, the existing West Carter High School was in need of interior renovations and lacked adequate space to meet enrollment needs.
Renovations included installation of a sprinkler system, updating the existing cafeteria, a complete renovation of the existing media center, removing and replacing two stairways and improving corridor and circulation areas. Existing systems were also upgraded and the facility was brought into ADA compliance.
Given the limitations of the site—both size and existing traffic circulation—the infill addition included two standard classrooms, an art room and a band/chorus room. The design addressed improving student circulation and security, especially during after-hours activities. It also utilized glass to improve natural lighting and an energy-efficient geothermal heating and cooling system to reduce energy costs.
Several features of the building’s exterior were renovated as well. A new roof was installed for the entire building, and a new entry canopy was designed to give the main entry more prominence.
Construction was carefully phased to enable the facility to remain occupied while renovations were underway.
