A steadily growing district faced with already overcrowded schools, the Garrard County Board of Education opted to build a new high school and redistribute its student population to alleviate overcrowding. Under the plan, the district will utilize its existing high school for 7th and 8th graders and shift its middle school population to include 5th and 6th graders, thereby freeing up the space in each elementary school that had previously reserved for 5th graders.

The new Garrard County High School will be constructed on an 84-acre site and will be constructed in phases. Phase 1 will entail the construction of the main body of the high school including classrooms to serve 800 students and common space to accommodate 1,000.

ENERGY STAR certification will be pursued for the new facility, which will include a variety of high-performance features including geothermal heating and cooling. The high school incorporates administrative and standard classroom spaces with several specialty areas like family and consumer science classrooms, technical labs, business labs, music and art. The design organizes departments based on a radiating spoke plan. Because future phases are planned for the school, spaces were carefully laid out to ensure that departments could easily shift to accommodate future phases while remaining congruous.

Future phases will provide additional classrooms, a performance gym to supplement the auxiliary gymnasium, athletics facilities and an auditorium.
