Whitley City Elementary School replaced one constructed by the WPA in the 1930s. The previous facility lacked space for general and specialized classrooms, had outdated systems, and lacked adequate space for playgrounds, parking and traffic.
The new facility is located on a previously undeveloped forestland acquired from the US Forestry Service. Views into the surrounding landscape have been prominently featured throughout the building, and the structure has been located and configured to maximize available space for playgrounds, parking and transportation lanes.
With a potential occupancy of 650 students, this state-of-the-art educational facility creates an environment that enhances the school system’s ability to educate its students. It will also serve the community at large with the inclusion of a 600-seat gymnasium with public restrooms, entry, lobby and concession spaces—all of which can be secured separately from the rest of the building.
