The biggest design challenge for the Boston Elementary School in Whitley County was transformation. Housed in a 40-year old, eight-room school building with outlying portables were 200 children that desperately needed space. The old school building had some local sentiment and the need to retain something of the old school was desired. RossTarrant Architects set out to transform the school into a facility that would fulfill the needs of the local community into the new millennium.
The school’s entrance was placed where the old school building’s entrance used to stand to retain a familiarity in the community. The old school building became the administration and media center, with a new preschool wing added adjacent to it. The new cafeteria has a large window wall which overlooks a new expanded bus loop that enables students to see the arrival the school buses. The new gymnasium can seat up to 400 students, the future anticipated student size of the elementary school. The classroom wings overlook the mountain hillside, and a new science and music room are located in close proximity.
One can barely see a hint of what used to be the old school, but one cannot ignore how much this school will impact the community and education for years to come.
