The new Whitley East Elementary School consolidates two existing schools—Poplar Creek Elementary and Nevisdale Elementary—on the existing Poplar Creek campus. The new facility serves preschool through sixth grade and was built to accommodate 350 students.
The facility includes two academic wings, one for primary and one for intermediate grade levels, separated by the specialized classrooms, which are utilized by all grade levels. These include art and science, music, computer and special education. A family resource center is also included. Common areas such as the media center, cafeteria and gymnasium were all designed to be accessed after-hours and secured separately from the academic areas of the school.
This facility is utilized by the community as well as the local students. The new design took advantage of pre-existing athletic fields and a nature trail, which were preserved and incorporated into the new school. The gymnasium was also designed to accommodate large community meetings and after-school events, opening into the cafeteria to create a stage-like area for plays, performances and other events.
