Bluegrass Community & Technical College Classroom Building

Bluegrass Community & Technical College Classroom Building

With continually increasing enrollment, Bluegrass Community & Technical College (formerly Lexington Community College and part of the University of Kentucky) is quickly running out of room at its existing Cooper Drive campus.

The new building will be the center of campus life for students, including student center spaces such as lounges, game rooms, dining areas with both indoor and outdoor seating opportunities, student organization offices, the campus bookstore, and large meeting spaces. It will also include a new learning resource center that will include the college’s book and resource collections as well as computer stations and space for more than 150 students to study individually or in group study areas.

The facility will accommodate academic spaces, including laboratories and classrooms for chemistry, microbiology, environmental science technology and biology. Classroom, laboratory and support space will also be provided for the registered nurse and practical nurse programs. Both full- and part-time faculty will receive office space. In addition to the specialized classrooms, new lecture and computer classrooms will also be included for use by the entire campus.

One important aspect of the building design is the goal of achieving LEED certification, a national standard for energy-efficient and environmentally responsible design. This will be one of the first buildings in Kentucky designed and built to this standard and represents the forward thinking of BCTC and KCTCS.
