In response to continually increasing enrollment, Bluegrass Community & Technical College sought to develop a brand new Lexington campus. This building will be the first new construction on BCTC’s Newtown Pike Campus, a site currently occupied by Eastern State Hospital.
The new facility will be a four-story building consisting of computer classrooms, lecture classrooms, learning commons, a science lab, a film production studio and faculty and support spaces. Academic programs will include Business, Computer Science and Information Systems, Film Production and Education. Other programs and services will include the Learning Commons, Student Services Center, Career Center and Administrative offices.
Project goals include the creation of flexible spaces that can be adapted as the campus grows, maximizing potential for partnerships with the downtown community, and encouraging community use.
The building will be steel framed with cold-formed metal framing exterior walls and metal stud and gypsum board interior walls. Exterior building materials will primarily consist of masonry including limestone and brick, aluminum windows and a low-slope roofing system. In accordance with HB2, this project will seek to achieve a minimum LEED Silver certification as described by USGBC’s LEED New Construction 2009.
